Library Volunteer

With more than 45 years of her life devoted to studying chimpanzees and spreading her messages of conservation and hope to millions around the world, Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE has amassed an enormous amount of books and audio/visual materials from around the world. Here at the Jane Goodall Institute, we are in the process of cataloguing these resources for a potential future Jane Goodall Library and Museum. And we need your help!
Description of volunteer opportunity: We are seeking a volunteer with experience in information management or library science to help us create and implement a private library for Dr. Goodall’s personal books and audio/visual materials. Our goal is to achieve seamless integration of our electronic and physical records of these resources, and to make them more accessible to the Jane Goodall Institute staff in a private library. The books are being catalogued using the Library of Congress system.
This is a very exciting opportunity for you to get involved and help us create a “physical history” of Dr. Goodall and her work, and the efforts of so many people around the world who share our mission.
Time commitment: Weekdays with flexible hours

Communications Volunteer

Archiving Volunteer

Here at the Jane Goodall Institute, we are in the process of preserving and archiving all of these artifacts for a potential future Jane Goodall Library and Museum. And we need your help!
Description of volunteer opportunity: We are seeking a volunteer with experience in archiving and artwork preservation to help us complete and maintain the archives for Dr. Goodall’s personal gifts and artifacts. Our goal is to achieve seamless integration of our electronic and physical records of these archives, and to appropriately prepare those items for storage or display.
This is a very exciting opportunity for you to help us create a “physical history” of Dr. Goodall and her work in order to help ensure that her message is accessible to the public for generations to come.

Roots & Shoots Volunteer

Roots &
Shoots, a program of the
Jane Goodall Institute (JGI), is seeking a committed volunteer to assist with
outreach efforts in the New York City
area. Founded in 1991 by Dr. Jane Goodall and a group of Tanzanian students,
Roots & Shoots engages young people in service projects that help people,
animals and the environment, and connects them with similarly engaged young
people worldwide. With tens of thousands of young people in almost 100
countries, the Roots & Shoots network connects youth of all ages who share
a desire to create a better world.
The Roots & Shoots volunteer will assist the New York City
Outreach Coordinator with publicizing the program as well as nurturing the
network of existing Roots & Shoots members. A major role of the volunteer
will be to help plan an event to commemorate United Nations International Day
of Peace on September 21, 2008. The
volunteer will also help to coordinate other smaller events leading up to this
day, most of them involving the Roots & Shoots community.
Volunteer responsibilities include:
- Handling general program information
requests by phone, mail, email, and fax.
- Assisting in the design and
implementation of the Roots & Shoots program within New York City
- Maintaining contact with groups in the NYC tri-state
area
- Occasionally interacting with the general
public and representing the program at events on an as needed basis
- Aiding the NYC Outreach Coordinator in
planning major events and outreaching opportunities
Successful candidates will possess the following:
- Interest in helping youth make positive
differences for their environment and community
- Bachelor's or equivalent degree or be
currently enrolled in a college level program
- Good communication and organizational
skills
- Experience working with young people or
in an environmental field
- Office and/or business experience
- Strong computer skills and Internet savvy
(Microsoft Office and prior database experience preferred)
- Courteous and professional phone manner
- Exceptional writing skills
- Ability to be flexible in a fast-paced
and constantly changing working environment
- Initiative and ability to work
independently
- Reliability and dedication to the work
- Live within close proximity to Manhattan
- Access to a personal computer and
internet
The volunteer
will start immediately and must be committed to working through the end of September
2008, with the possibility of extending the volunteer term. There will be no hourly compensation or
stipend. Hours will be determined by workload and may change on a weekly basis.
This is a very flexible engagement. A
typical week will entail about 20 hours of work. Volunteers must be able to
complete most of their work from home, yet also be available to meet in person
in Manhattan
1-2 times per week.

Volunteer Video Logger

The Jane Goodall Institute (Arlington) is currently looking for volunteers to assist with logging a vast library of raw footage of chimpanzees in the wild. Several projects are planned to be made from this footage, including a national television series, and internet projects. If you are a film student interested in learning more about television, editing, producing etc, or you are interested in conservation and want to "give back", or just enjoy watching chimps, we could use your help.
