Photos of the top 25 most endangered primates

Contributor: JGI-USA

In case you missed it, a report in February listed the top 25 most endangered primate species. They include great apes, the Cross River Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla diehli) and Sumatran Orangutan (Pongo abelii), both of whose numbers are in the hundreds. It says: "Almost half (48 percent) of the world’s 634 primate species are classified as threatened with extinction on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™. The main threats are habitat destruction, particularly from the burning and clearing of tropical forests (which results in the release of around 16 percent of the global greenhouse gases causing climate change), the hunting of primates for food, and the illegal wildlife trade."

You can see some of the species discussed in this photo gallery.

Artists' renderings of same species are here.

The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, which evaluates the conservation status of plants and animals, lists chimpanzees (Pan troglodyes) as "endangered."

You can search the list online for information about species of all kinds.
